| [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]56 is no age, and in such tragic circumstances. Him and John Matthews were a formidable central midfield duo, complementing each other perfectly. |

| Shocking news. Dave Smith's team will always be my favourites as that glorious season was my first with Argyle. |

| Jeez, that is a shock.Same age as me and one of my all time favourite midfielders at his best-he could certainly spray the ball around and formed one hell of a partnership with John Matthews in that 1985/86 team.I think Russell liked a pint or two off the field along with some of his team mates and lived life to the full-proper footballer IMHO.
RIP Russell and thanks for the memories. |

| We used to joke that as an opponent, if Coughlin gave you the black spot, your days were numbered.
Awful news. RIP to an Argyle great. |

| Desperately sad news that another legend has been taken from us.
Ciderman's Pilgrims remain, I think, those closest to my heart - and the run-in to that season must have been just about the most sensational batch of results in the club's entire history; the semi-final crew (with whom there was an overlap) next; Luggy's Lads after that; Shilton's team some way behind them; Warnock's Wembley Winners some way back in the distance.
Of Ciderman's Pilgrims Coughlin was one of the most under-appreciated: a proper little hard nut who could pass the ball with aplomb and there'll always be that goal he scored from the corner v Bristol City to gladden our hearts in perpetuity.
He gave us so much.
Thank you, Russell, and may you rest in peace. |

| During the 85/86 season, I had just left school and was at St Austell College doing the first year of my A levels. Thanks to that wonderful teams efforts, of which Russell and Johnny were certainly the midfield heartbeat, I just had to give up my studies and go out an earn some money to follow the team around the second division. RIP Russell, another childhood hero gone too soon. |
