| Has anybody seen this film/documentary?
It charts Nottingham Forest's resurgence. Following the appointment of Brian Clough Forest rapidly rose from mid-table CCC (equivalent) obscurity to PL (equivalent) Champions and back-to-back Champs League (equivalent) winners with a League Cup or two along the way. The film claims that it was an achievement unrivalled anywhere in world football - and it may be right to do so.
From an Argyle perspective Peter Shilton, John McGovern and Ian Bowyer feature promininently even if we don't merit (and in this context we did not) a mention.
Anyway it is fabulous. It's a really affectionate tribute to them all with lots of interviews and stacks of wonderful archive footage of huge seething terraces, men with facial hair, mud heap football pitches, footballers smoking and, of course, The Great Man himself.
It's brilliant. If you get a chance to see it then don't pass it up. |

| That sounds like something to search out. I still remember with some fondness the day Cloughie's Forest rode into Plymouth. An evening game I think. They were just off the scale, with Robertson and Woodcock streets ahead of anything I had seen . They only beat us by a couple or so, but they were untouchable. Just couldn't get the ball off them, and then they suddenly would explode. And mostly from so so players from the lower divisions. Sunderland did it on a much smaller scale with their Micky Pigswill team. It's one of the things that has largely devalued football, the demise of a cracking lower league team that stays together. I guess Wimbledon did something similar, but more on the thug side than the footballing ability. The Shilton and Francis purchases were the icing on the cake. So, so sad to see Clough disappear under a bottle. I don't think I would personally have got on with his patriarchal authoritarian ways, but liked his passion.Hopefully, he had other ways with his players. |

| To a man they would all have happily run through brick walls for him.
The team that won the first European Cup had 5 players from the mid-table obscurity side. I think they were Martin O'Neill, John Robertson, Colin Somebody (a full back), Ian Bowyer and AN Other.
His first signing was John McGovern (who followed him everywhere).
It's all in the film which is currently knocking around on BT Sport so there's bound to be a re-run or three.
If you don't have that then I don't know.
There's some cracking 70s choons in the soundtrack too.
It's just all kinds of wonderful. |

It's just all kinds of wonderful. Colin Barrett I think. There's a great book by the main guardian football hack, Daniel Taylor too. Should never be forgotten that Clough's success was in no small part to Peter Taylors eye for a player. Kenny Burns was the best, a hard drinking, gambling and brawling striker at Birmingham was converted into central defender on his say so. Along with Larry Lloyd an unlikable defender who's best days were thought behind him after being kicked out of Liverpool they formed one of the best defensive partnerships in the 70's. |

| Damned Utd, though hated by the Clough family, is a good dramatisation of the Clough/Taylor dynamic.
Also, 'Provided You Don't Kiss Me' is a good alternative view of Clough from a local journalist.
Mr Trickle - meant to answer your text on this doc - will seek it out. Sounds like one for an airport lounge... |

Cloughie didn't start drinking until much later and certainly didn't swear like he did in the book. that said Sheen was a great Cloughie and Colm Meeney was an inspired choice as Revie. |

To be fair to David Peace, who wrote the book (and the Red Riding books - fecking terrifying), he never said it was based on fact, ergo the dramatisation followed that. Did feel like there was truth in the Clough/Taylor portrayal though, even if there was a good dollop of artistic licence. |
