| Reminded me currently watching Good Morning Britain and Chris Kamara on the Show. Mind you Micky Horswill didn't have the best of reputations either ! Another away to Bolton in mid 70's was Sam Allardyce.... |

| Wise for being a sneaky little shite, hardly Vinnie Jones in the tackle, but pinching, poking, little taps and a constant windup down the lug ole. |

| He wasn't generally a dirty player, but I've always hated Graeme Sharpe for breaking Summerfields leg at Goodison in the replay. Cnut. Summers was never really the same player after that. |

I think Everton appeared in Shoot magazine shortly afterwards. I managed to rip his face from all the magazines sold in the local newsagents. |

| Another vote for Chopper Harris, and I also saw him do his nasty business against Argyle in a midweek cup match at the Bridge, on the back of a lost week hitching around. Played a couple of times later in the 70s when we rubbed shoulders with them, and each time he was a horror.
Surprisingly, I also thought Terry Paine was a dirty player. As a youngster, I was shocked an international winger could be so nasty. He delighted in studs up dangerous tackles. |

| Paine and Harris were dirty little Shi'ites, there were loads of them about in that era. Two who spring to mind were Alan Stephenson of Palace-saw him put a huge gash in Mike Bickles knee at HP-and Duncan Forbes of Norwich. Mind you, Nelson was an animal as well-those blokes would have looked after Costa and no excuses. Kevin Muscat was one of the biggest psychotics ever to take the field although I don't remember him playing much against Argyle but there was a good clash once at HP between Vinnie Jones and John Matthews-felt sorry for the ball in some of the tackles. A lot of the really vicious stuff has been eradicated by rule changes over the years, quite right too. |

| What's interesting is how the interpretation of the rules has changed, and what is considered a cheating player these days. Virtually every penalty area action is marred with such obvious pulling, that it almost makes the game a farce, with every player indulging. Hardly dark arts any more, given the so obvious ubiquitous cheating.
For me, the modern continual constant upper body pulling/dragging is ruining the game far more than ever the flying high tackle from 50 yards out. It's a different game. And not a better one. |

Maybe there is a balance to be struck somewhere.Agree that some of the antics that go on,especially at corners and free kicks, are incredible-it was exempified on Tuesday night when Brunt [i think] was hauled to the ground, going back again to days gone by,Mick McManus would have been proud of it.The matter is in the referees hands AFAIC-doesn't matter who started it,the first offence that he sees should be a free kick or penalty.Quite difficult though i suppose when a lot of it occurs when the ball is dead.Don't think the game lost much though by outlawing the crash-through-the -legs tackle from behind,by which a lot of carthorse defenders negated the effect of more talented players. |
