Renewing loans? (Boateng)- Tanner Stays for Season/ Threlkeld until April

Boateng is the one I'd really like to see signed, now, if not someone of a similar quality.

Not a big fan of thelkeld tbh but good to see Tanner back as well...but for me boetang is the one that they will miss
Think its the last we will see of him cos of that injury (damm shame) so the hunt should be looking for a like for like replacement ASAP

If Boateng doesn't return, that is where Smith comes into the equation.

smith is more defensive midfielder we need a Boatang type player urgent plus still cant see the footballing logic in letting lee cox go on loan even though iam not his biggest fan

Just been told Pardew is keeping Boateng at Palace.

Softened by Oscar signing up though. Still a bit gutted, mind.

Adams may well have seen this coming, hence the Smith interest.

My understanding is padrew wants to keep him there till nearer the end of the window while he looks to secure a signing or two first. hiram deal is being put on ice incase the signings fall but i gather once they are he'll be back here.

On reflection, no need to panic, yet. Over 3 weeks of the window left so let's see what happens.

Maybe Pardew thinks half a season with us has got Boateng's confidence up. Now it is time to get him training with the first team and learning from the likes of Cabaye, Ledley etc., get in the matchday squad and maybe see about 10 mins here and there from the bench.

Hopefully though it is just a case of Pardew being sensible and covering all bases in midfield until their transfer targets are in and settled.

However the interest in Alan Smith to me seems to indicate that Boateng may not be back. McHugh and Smith sitting, Carey in front, Simpson and Threlkeld as cover/rotation for the midfield pivots and Tanner to cover the Carey role until he's back. Then having Boateng back would be a luxury but not essential - the championship charge will go on as scheduled.

Not shocked at all, was obvious with the other action, more Jimmys wage bill then nailed on promo being the driving force IMO. If injuries plague us for the next couple of weeks then we will behold a Boateng scoop if not we will manage. Smith is 35 years old slow an injury prone. i gather his potential signing will be more about throwing him on for the last 20 minutes to protect a lead in games than it would be to replace boateng. If boaeng isnt coming back we need to look for someone new.

Why does Alan Smith or any incoming centre midfielder need to possess Boateng's exact traits to play in Argyle's midfield? Threlkeld isn't as classy on the ball as Hiram either but that hasn't stopped him coming in and doing a good job.

you replace good players with equally good if not better players. To replace Boateng with Smith is like trading in an MV Agusta Rivale 800 for a scooter.

Boateng from the limited amount I saw him was an out and out attacking mid, almost a lightweight striker, something that Smith isn't. Not saying that Smith isn't good just different. If we got Ried, Carey and Luke fit, and had Boateng we would be unstoppable. The importance of the team that got us top of the table was adding to the twenty goal capability of Reid with Jervis, , Carey and Boateng all adding to the scoresheet. As we saw with only Reid last year twenty goals will get you playoffs, we are in automatics lets stay there.

Yes, Alan Smith looked every inch the 50cc scooter when we played Notts County and he beat the Augusta Rivale in every challenge and 50/50. To the extent that the scooter was dominating the midfield battle, and both our goals needed direct long passes over Smith's head for Reuben to finish.

Other than that the analogy totally works!

Alan Smith and Hiram Boateng are very different players. We won't replace a player with Boateng's technique on the ball at League Two level - Palace fans were surprised we were loaned him in the first place. Pardew seems to have had a change of heart too.

So if you are losing an influential midfielder like Boateng, what better than a midfield winner like Alan Smith to partner McHugh? He is slowing but he's a winner who comes out of a challenge with the ball far more often than not, and can give the ball to Jervis or Carey to get it back in the opposition half - just like McHugh does and quite rightly gets praise for doing. Boateng was neither a big goal scorer nor assist provider, so Smith's defensive nature shouldn't result in any kind of drop in goals or chances created, the way replacing a player like Carey with Smith would.

I can honestly see us being dominant with Smith in team - powerful at the back with Hartley and Nelson, power in midfield with McHugh and Smith, and power up top in Reuben and Brunt. It will be a formidable spine to the team for the opposition to have to get through.

apply some logic and seriously think about it for a minute is Alan Smith likely to play every game or even last 90 minutes on a pitch at his age and with his injury record? oh before anyone mentions Nalis, totally different scenario given he was in better nick looked after himself very well throughout his career and not injury prone when he came here.

as i said already on this thread, if he comes here and it is still if for now it will be as someone to throw on to shore up the midfield in games i dont see him keeping the likes of mchugh or threlkeld out of the side much. oh and yes we do still need to replace boateng with another midfielder and smith isnt the guy to do that. We need to add numbers to the squad not keep it the same Smith would be a squad player not the marque player.

He's been starting matches all season perfectly fine, and has spent more time on the pitch than Boateng this season.

Adams will have scouted Smith a lot more thoroughly than you will have, so if he sees use for him then I'm happy with that.

I can see Argyle using him in the same way.

Start Smith with McHugh, set out as a strong unit, win the midfield battle, get the ball to the wingers/scorers to create, then take Smith off when his legs are tiring for the young apprentice Threlkeld to finish the job.

I would've thought Smith would be a direct replacement for the seemingly outward bound Cox, not Boateng.  If so we're basically gaining a player who will add to the squad even if he doesn't play every game or a full 90.  Perfect to either play alongside McHugh or cover for him should he be needed for CB duties, injured or suspended.

This is the reason why Threlkeld's stay at the League Two leaders has been extended only until April 9 and not for the rest of the campaign.

It will give Bolton the opportunity to assess the development of the 21-year-old and whether he will feature in their future plans.

Threlkeld's loan to Argyle will finish after the visit of AFC Wimbledon to Home Park on April 9 and cannot be extended after that.

Argyle manager Derek Adams told Herald Sport: "Bolton Wanderers want to recall him at that stage and be part of their squad from then until the end of the season.
