| Guy Vs Halloween?
As a kid I grew up in the 'penny for the Guy' and building our own bonfires era... Now I live in a land and culture where Halloween is king, and 'V' is Guy.
Gunpowder or Ghoul? The 5th or the 31st? Who is the champ these days? |

| Down this neck of the woods, the end of October is the oldest tradition, and is of course the old agrarian Celtic new year when we used to stand or fall on the harvests we had produced, and the food foraged. Next month was always known as "Seed fall" and hence the final end and start of the cycle all over again. I always mark the New year tomorrow by sowing my early peas crop under cover. Makes me feel connected to the whole ethos. So, I'm happy "Halloween has found a more important place once again, even though it is due to further integration from across the pond. I obviously don't like the ludicrous commercialisation that has come with it, but it is most definitely the largest celebration. Not into the trick or treat obviously. However Ricks, if you pop up to Somerset, you'll find their derivative of Guy Fawkes is by far the biggest celebration, with their nightfall carnival fortnight, which is without a doubt THE biggest spectacle of it's kind in the world. I can't recommend it more highly. If any can't make the rougher raucous Bridgewater carnival, then the closing Glastonbury event is an absolute must. As normal, I shall be staying over night and getting slaughtered. I do like a bit of fire this time of year. As to the actual political Guy Fawkes conspiracy, I'm into conspiracies, they do exist.

| The last few years Halloween has got bigger and bigger this side of the Pond. Not so much an increase in numbers of kids knocking on your door, but more an excuse for a fancy dress night out or house party for adults. We were supposed to be going to a do tonight but I reckon I've managed to dodge it. |

| Always thought it bizarre.......
Parents warn kids beware of strangers, yet ok to knock on random doors & want sweets in return.
War on terror, yet shops full of gunpowder mid october to new year eve !!!

| 95% of child abuse/paedo issues occur within the family. Trick and treat kids halloween things disappear by 9 0' clock.
War on terror, but more people will die going to work tomorrow with inadequate health and safety, and always have. Ten people will die on the roads tomorrow. I hate to think how many will die due to underfunded health care. I could go on. Some of you need a sense of perspective, rather than adhering to the ghoul mentality, sponsored by a Baron near you. |

It has no place. 600+ posts in 3 months suggests you do "go on". |

| Blimey Rollo, I'm beginning to think you've got a thing for me. I responded to Rickler's posed question, as it's a subject that interests me more than most. Angry gave it the paedo thing, and Elias gave a war on terror comment, neither of which were particularly relevant, but I thought a couple of throwaways were worth a bit of a response, that's how ATD is. Did I step on your lawn in a previous life ? Have you got any useful or interesting input to Rickler's OP ? Do you actually have an opinion on the old new year and Autumn fire festivals ? |
