York City announce Russ Wilcox dismissal

York have parted company with manager Russ Wilcox and his assistant John Schofield, the club have announced.

The Minstermen's 3-1 defeat against AFC Wimbledon on Saturday left them in 21st place in Sky Bet League Two.

Wilcox was appointed in October 2014 but won just 13 of his 54 games in charge.

The 51-year-old former Scunthorpe boss led City to an 18th-placed finish last season as City struggled to replicate their form which landed them a play-off spot in the 2013-14 campaign.

A club statement read: "York City Football Club has parted company with first-team manager Russ Wilcox and his assistant John Schofield.

"Russ joined York City in October 2014 and successfully achieved the board of directors' target of securing League Two status at the end of last season, finishing 11 points clear of the relegation zone.

"Sadly, however, due to the team only attaining 12 points so far this season, the board felt they had to make a managerial change in order to give the club the best chance of necessary progress in the league."

York's next game is a league trip to Crawley on Saturday.
