| Deane Smalley continues his comeback from serious injury when Argyle begin their defence of the Edenvale Turf Devon St Luke's Challenge Cup on Tuesday. Deane is named in a 16-man Pilgrims squad for the visit of Tavistock to Home Park in the opening round of the competition which Argyle won last season. The 27-year-old striker is back in business after suffering ligament and cartilage damage in a training-ground clash with team-mate Ollie Norburn last year. Also included is goalkeeper James Bittner, who has recovered from a back operation, and three sets of brothers: Cory and Tyler Harvey; Jordan and Aaron Bentley; and Dan and Louis Rooney. The game kicks off at 7.45pm at Home PARK; entry is £4 for adults, and £2 for concessions. Tavistock play in the South West Peninsula League Premier Division - one division higher than our Advanced Development side. They won the Division 1 East title last season. Argyle won the Cup last season after a penalty shoot-out following a thrilling 4-4 draw with Bideford at Coach Road. Argyle (v Tavistock, Tuesday, October 13, 7.45pm): Aaron Bentley, Jordan Bentley, James Bittner (gk), Jack Calver, Callum Hall, Cory Harvey (gk), Tyler Harvey, Alex Fletcher, Liam Knowles, Ryan Lane, Billy Palfrey, Jamil Roberts, Dan Rooney, Louis Rooney, Deane Smalley, Jason Vincent Read more at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] |

I haven't been so angry about a reckless red in a big match since Beckham v Argentina. Some of us weren't too enamoured with Bentley's red against Oxford last season. |

I haven't been so angry about a reckless red in a big match since Beckham v Argentina. Some of us weren't too enamoured with Bentley's red against Oxford last season. It was a tad impetuous, fore shore, showed a lack of experience as much as anything. At least last night's was issued in what sounds as if it was a desperate defensive situation. As it ranspired that red card v Oxford was something of a turning point in our season: before it we were cruising to a win amd promotion looked likely; after it we stumbled to defeat; after that 3 others. The effect was to see us fall well behind the race for automatic promotion, lose all momentum and completely banjax the important Christmas period. It didn't seem like it at the time but with the benefit of hindsight that was as defining a moment as we have had in any season since Peter Swan made that tackle on Dalton up at Port Vale all those years ago. I just hope that Bentley's rush of blood doesn't presage years of decline like Swan's tackle did. |

True, but it is still an opportunity for those one the fringes of the first team to show the manager what they can do in a semi competitive fixture. Smalley getting himself sent off is unlikely to impress, especially as he's fighting for a place on the bench against Harvey and Rooney, both of whom scored. |

I just hope that Bentley's rush of blood doesn't presage years of decline like Swan's tackle did. It's a bit harsh putting all that on young Bentley's shoulders! If we had a squad capable of promotion, Bentley would never have been on the pitch in the first place. But he was. Over those Christmas/New Years games, O'Connor's loan had expired and he was no longer here. Hartley and Nelson were both out as I recall. Bobby Reid was taken back by Bristol City. All factors which kicked us in the b#ll#cks more than Aaron Bentley having an early bath in one game. |

To be fair, Smalley's lack of any discernable ability is more likely to stop him getting in the side that one silly red card. |

Maybe for those who stand chance they could use it to build up game time and fitness but i cant see Smalley breaking into our team bar the subs bench or any of the others who played. |

I had to google up if he had ever scored for Argyle so little did I know about him. Getting a red on the comeback trail wont help Smalley scored a cracking goal against Swindon here. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]He also scored the penalty in the last seconds if the Stevenage game, stopping Westley take 3 points away from Home Park. He netted 12 in 22 starts for Chesterfield in a promotion season from this division. However like many players at Argyle, he has his detractors. Well at least one anyway. Far from a useless player, I hope he returns from his injuries fighting fit because there is definitely more to see from him. |
