Listeners shocked as Judi Spiers axed from BBC Radio

BBC Radio Devon presenter Judi Spiers has been dropped by the station.

The controversial move was announced by the presenter to shocked listeners this morning.

She told her audience that after 15 years in the job, this week would be her last.

She told listeners: “This is my last week. But boy we’ve had some good times. We’ve had some dodgy times as well but on the whole we’ve had some good ones. We’ve had some dark times in recent day but hopefully they’ll be blown away.

I'm still in mourning for when the BBC moved Mark and Lard of radio One. That show was the best. The youngsters dont know good radio these days.

Quite shocked to hear Julie Spears is going from Radio Devon, not because I particularly like her shows as I tend to flit between her & Ken Bruce, but because she is part of the furniture.
Always felt she has never quite embraced the BBC PC agenda & wonder if this has contributed to her demise. Hopefully Simon Bates will get the gig.

I wish they would get rid of Bill Buckley, the lunchtime "presenter". Without doubt the most appalling, argumentative & self-interested person I have ever had the mis-fortune to hear on the radio

its what the bbc do. once you reach a certain age they move you out to bring in a nick grimshaw type replacement who goes on to lose 2million listeners regardless if the dj being fired for their age moved on to new projects within bbc brings in the highest number of punters or not.

You would think they would learn to leave shows with high ratings alone but its not their money they are wasting at thee end of the day its ours.

I enjoyed her broadcasts and know where I was sometimes when I listened. Anyone remember her interviewing the bloke from the old BR adverts? Strange bloke.

Doesn't explain why they brought in Simon Bates to do the breakfast show though? I think its to do with money, they don't have enough for Bates and Spiers and she was probably on quite a bit. I'd be surprised if they don't merge it with Radio Cornwall before too long.

I expect they'll wheel her out on Sundays like they did with Wogan who also left his show in similar over the top emotionally style. Only to turn up again on Sunday

Never understood the appeal of BBC local radio. An acquaintance of mine was a presenter on Radio Cornwall, and the news seemed to consist entirely of lost cats, people ringing in to read out the Daily Telegraph's editorial, and an obsession with the Royal Cornwall Show. Oh, and a playlist of about four songs, three of which were 'Walk Of Life' by Dire Straits.

Was Judi Spiers actually that popular with listeners though in terms of listener numbers to justify the bbc's call to save your money and spend it on another? i have never listen to judi spiers in my life so have no idea what appeal she has or not my boycott of radio devon is still strong till they stop hiring the plebb on match days.

No idea, I never listen to the station either. I'd just assume that with her experience and moderate celebrity she'd be on fair bit. An Argyle supporter allegedly but I've never seen her at Home Park.

I listened to Pirate FM and Radio Plymouth for a while after Radio 1 died but now mainly listen to Absolute Radio as they play a lot of 90's music (lots of Stone Roses etc). One of the presenters is from Newton Abbot (but is an Everton fan) and the other day made me laugh when he compared playing tennis for Essex to having a trial for Exeter City.

I've never listened to Judi Spiers.

I can't stand the constant adverts of commercial radio. I tend to flick between Radio 2, Radio 4 and Five Live in the car, or 6 Music if I'm at home.

Radio Devon is truly shite, i'm not young by any stretch, but who under the age of eighty could listen to it? Simon fookin Bates and Gordon Sparkless would kill any radio station in the world.
