PostSubject: Happy 13th to GreensOnScreen!   Happy 13th to GreensOnScreen! EmptySat Jan 07, 2012 10:58 am

Hi all
I saw this thread on pasoti and - forgive me if it's already been mentioned here - but wanted to echo the compliments on ATD.

Greens On Screen is, without doubt, one of the greatest websites I use. It's an endless source of information, memories, anecdotes - and it can settle a 'who scored when' argument quicker than anything else I know.

It is also, as far as I know, unique as a specialist site - maybe there are other football clubs who have such a rich database and fans memory bank but I don't know it. And anyway, it's unique cos it's Argyle.

Steve and Trevor have been fantastic and dedicated - the way they have managed to gather all the data and then organise it in such a user-friendly way (well if you're an Argyle fan) is brilliant and shows not only a genuine dedication to the club but a real commitment to serve the army of Argyle fans.

I used to live abroad and Greens On Screen was like a lifeline to 'my old world' to me then.

Anyway, a happy teenage birthday to the site and long may it continue.

By the way, my own elder son turned 13 recently - and I hope GoS doesn't have teenager syndrome Very Happy

Good post GM.

GoS is an excellent service and as you say, thanks must go to Steve and Trevor who give up a lot of time to provide such a great service. I lived abroad for a few months and it helped in keeping up to date.

It is a quite remarkable site, Steve's dedication to the maintenance of the standards he's set himself is exemplary, and now with Trevor's input it's even better. What I find amazing is how their enthuiasm has been maintained through these last dire few years. It is, of course, just as important historically, to record the downs as well as the ups but, by God, it must have been depressing to do it week after week, month after month and year after year.

GOS really is an excellent site but I have to say that my interest was dented and I was saddened when I read Steve's contribution to Newell's unwarranted "cowardly scumbag" thread on Pasoti.

Still, Happy Birthday GOS.

Last time I heard, Steve from GoS was considering withdrawing his link to here because we were libellous jerks. Or words to that affect.

Sad really.

Anyway, the best thing about GoS is the archives section, occasionally it is ok for links...aka formerly Semper Viridis. The matchday bit, well, once you've seen one matchday you've seen them all. The same people being photographed on their way to Dagenham and Crawley as we were seeing 5 years ago going to Upton Park and the Stadium of Light...sigh.

Still, happy birthday. Argyle fans foreshore, etc

Many thanks for the kind words folks. Trev and I do our best, but yes, it has been tough to keep going these last couple of years, and occasional messages like this really do help. As you probably know, the number of people who help out has grown over the years and I'm so grateful to the regulars for their continued support, and long may it last.

One thing raised here: yes I agree that photos, week in and week out, year after year, can seem a bit tedious to some. It's something I've been very conscious of for many years, especially for home games (at least on our travels the surroundings are different each time). But whenever I've raised it, people tell me how important the photos are, a view that is especially strong overseas. I guess it's a case of each to his own.

And a couple of specifics on this thread - GOB, you said that I contributed to "Newell's unwarranted 'cowardly scumbag' thread on Pasoti". This comes as a complete surprise to me and I honestly can't remember the thread or what I am supposed to have written. Can you point me to it? And Mock Cruncher, are you suggesting that I used the words libellous jerks, or something to that effect? If not, who was it and who suggested that that I was considering withdrawing the link? As you can see, I haven't.

Thanks again,
Steve

I think unless someone had hacked your Pasoti account, it was your good self that mentioned the possibility of withdrawing the link, Steve. Sad

Just to echo what others have said, if the phrase 'labour of love' was given a dictionary definition, then that definition would be a link to GoS.

Steve it would be a mistake to blow things out of proportion all over again especially regarding yourself and GOS, a site that I think is fair to say has a respected position among all Argyle fans. It was simply a comment that supported Newell's disgraceful behavior, nothing all that unsavory from yourself, it just saddened me a little to read it considering his comments were totally unfounded. I believe the thread was edited and finally removed.

Welcome to ATD though Steve, we just want what's best for the club, we're not for those that are in it for personal ambition.

I rember that thread, it was disapointing. Someimes people don't realise the attempted kicking they are contributing to.
However, what a great site GOS has always been. I haven't seen better on the web..... and a brillian database... you should be proud of yourself.
Happy birthday GOS. Just give us sorts a chance, Steve. We care about the future of the club, as well as it's past.

I'd never really looked at it until this was posted so I had a look earlier and I have to say it is awesome. Full credit to the people who devote what must be an awful lot of time to add that much info. I'm going to take a trip down memory lane from time to time.

I'm afraid you've hit the part of the site that I'm frankly a bit embarrassed about. The problem with a 13-year-old website is that you end up with a vast mix of content, with some parts so old that it isn't up to scratch. So you make a special effort to improve it, get distracted by other things going on, and end up with a bit of a botch. That's what's happened to the old Home Park material I'm afraid, but it's on my list of things to tackle in the summer. Sorry!

GoS is easily the best and by far the most informative unofficial website of any club. Great website - shame about the club.
