A bland domestic career that millions of young boys dream of and old men would've given their eye teeth to have achieved.

Really? 2nd in the Prem twice and a couple of cups?

Among the best centre midfielders in the world of his generation?

Call me fussy but I would rather have achieved what Frank Lampard, Michael Carrick or even Darren Fletcher has - make your own mind up if Gerrard could have been as good as them!

I personally think he could have achieved what the other top centre midfielders of his generation  (Zidane, Pirlo, Cambiasso, Scholes, Xavi, Iniesta, Nedved, Alonso, Schweinsteiger) did but he reached nowhere near that kind of glory.

He stayed clearly the best player in a side not on his level his whole career, and that is what this thread is about isn't it? Apart from arguably Torres and later Suarez, for about 5 - 10 seasons you would not have hesitated to answer the question 'who is Liverpool's best player?' with Gerrard.

Jason Koumas stood out a mile playing for Tranmere when he was in his early days. Never quite fulfilled his potential did he?

This sort of stand out player comparison will always apply to players who started out at lesser teams. One that sticks in my memory is a home game against Crewe where they passed us to death and a young Dean Ashton was literally taking the piss with the ball.

Good team that, I remember the game at Gresty Road. We won 1-0 with a debutant Norris scoring. They threw the kitchen sink but kept trying to walk the ball in. Remember Kenny Lunt being quite good too.

Or even Grimes at Exeter as their recent run of results shows. Amazing how despite Exeter being such a professional outfit have still spent much of their history in the 4th division and have ever been above the 3rd

TBH i do believe Grimes was far to good to play lg2 football, i also believe he is to good for Swansea, time will tell

That said Grimes would have made much difference yesterday, the way we play he would have been ineffective yesterday

100 odd years 5 non league and around 7 tier 3, looking at the past is fine, but doesnt really tell the future, its like saying Stockport have always been shite, yet for almost 30 yrs (that i remember) they were a tier 1 tier 2 club, doesnt mean they will always be there

another player that i thought was far to good for the basement was Littlejohn, the FAC game in 97 he was head and shoulders the best player on the pitch

I can't remember Stockport ever being a top flight club. That said you're right they did have a good team, most greens of a certain age remember what Kevin Francis used to do to us. Didnt he tip up at your place for a bit?

I agree about Grimes, he's a bit special and ought to have done better than Swansea. He'd have fitted quite nicely at Arsenal I reckon.

I might me wrong but im sure in the (very early) 80s they were along side Cardiff and Swansea, but i could be wrong as i was only 7 or 8

Yeah he did for a while iirc Sad

Yes Totally agree Arsenal would have been a good place for him, but they tend to bring there own players through, i just hope Swansea give him plenty of game time, he is prob the best player ive seen at our place for years, to be that young aswell, the next 2 years are very important to his development

They bought Aaron Ramsey from Cardiff, Luke Cambers etc so maybe it could have happened, although despite me thinking he's a typical winger player maybe they've got enough in that position. Although FWIW I think he's better than Wilshere.

But still I think he's that good Swansea will have to pick him and he'll push on from there. Swansea do look after their players so hopefully he's at the right place for now at least and they will play him.

He'll have an England cap before the season is out. Who else have we got, Rooney, Kane and Carroll?

Welbeck, Berahino and Sturridge?

All 6 are better than Austin.

Sturridge is injured, and Berahino is not a better CF than Austin. More potential perhaps, but not the better striker yet.

Austin has 13 league goals this season, Welbeck has 4. Who is the form player there?

I rarely find myself agreeing with ejh but on this occasion he is self evidently correct, Kane and Austin should be the only two on Woy's list on form, only thing is Austin ain't much cop up front on his own, they both though are scoring goals while playing for relatively shit teams.

I saw George Best and Kenny Dalglish in their pomp, either would have been too good for any team, any time, were I of course to accept the premise.

Don Rogers for Swindon, 3rd division club taking the Arse to pieces in the League Cup Final, Rodney Marsh doing the same for QPR over West Brom are the two best I can think of.

I thought this thread was about great players, Luke Chambers is a journeyman centre back who plays for Ipswich.
