PostSubject: Things even better than a roast dinner   Things even better than a roast dinner EmptySun Nov 23, 2014 9:01 pm

Off the top of my head I can't think of any but there must be something.

Roast potatoes and parsnips beautifully soft on the inside and lightly caramelised on the outside; carrots and broccoli boiled until softened and not at all fashionably slightly-under-done; chicken studded with slithers of garlic and with skin all seasoned and golden and crunchy; homemade stuffing alive with herbs and a bit crunchy where it has spilled out of the carcass of the bird in the oven; swede mashed with butter and lashings of black pepper; gravy: beautiful gravy - peppery, oleaginous, hot.

All washed down with a glass of icy cold, pink champers being quaffed not to celebrate anything but just to be willfully indulgent.

Followed by a strong, bitter filtered Peruvian coffee accompanied by a generous-but-not-too-generous slug of brandy.

Bliss.

If anybody has a spare half an hour can they come round and do the washing up for me?

TBH when it comes to roast I'm not fussy. Lammmmmmmmmmmb is something that never fails to impress. Shoulder, eh? Boned I take it? Can't be doing with shoulder-on-the-bone. Too much hassle to carve. No stuffing either with lamb. But lammmmmmmmmmb's good for me. Better than beef, deffo.

Kind of like to cock a snook at tradition and have a Yorkshire pud, or two, with it.

But infused with garlic and/or rosemary, mint sauce (natch) and served only very slightly pink.

The only think I like to see oozing blood on my plate is a steak.

There's a place down the road from me which on a sunday does roasted lamb shoulder/garlicked foreshore, and serves with the bone. I've tried to recreate but it doesn't work as well - as you say not as easy to divvy up when you're at home unless you buy two shoulders...which tbf might be an option now I think abait it fer next time.

Lamb. Neck of lamb. On the bone but with one chunk per person. Well cheap. In a casserole dish with baby onions, big chunks of turnip and carrot and whole button mushrooms (nothing fancy going on here), glass of red and stock to cover, maybe some thyme and a bayleaf or two, gas mk 4 for 2 hours (maybe longer - the longer the better actually).

Serve with spuds mashed with an obscene amount of butter.

I prefer a vegetarian roast myself.

Lamb shoulder in the bone cooked properly should fall apart, no need for carving, mmmm, topside of beef, very rare for me last night althought tbh I prefer Rib or Brisket. Pheasant is on my wish list this week which you can buy cheap as fook in the feather if you don't have your own gun.
Copper Penny Inn gulworthy has opened a farm shop where Peter the landlord sells pheasant and venison from his own shoot £2/brace in the feather, sometimes have oven ready birds.
Don't forget a nice bit of curly kale with your veg.

Yep, nothing can beat a bleddy good roast dinner. Some of the pubs around here do a good one, the Weary Friar at Pillaton and the Blacksmiths at Lamerton are acebuggerdamn. Actually the Toby carvery at the George isn't at all bad value, going there for our golf club do in a couple of weeks and the Dartmoor Diner is pretty good, need to book well in advance for that one though. But the prize of crème de la roast must go to the ones that my grans and mum used to do. Fook me they knew how to do it, i tend to start drooling just thinking about them. Happy days.

Many a time over the last few years I have considered giving up meat. The only meat I tend to eat these days is chicken. I think I could quite easily go without.

Now, a bacon sarny on Sunday morning is a different matter all together. Please help me!

May be worth trying one of the Gunnislake pubs for that, i did hear once that they specialise in Beef, Bread pudding and Blow job Sunday lunches, don't know if that's correct or not. Probably is actually.

Thoroughly agree with Pepsi's succinct comment as well.

I can definitely see the argument for giving up meat. The carbon footprint thing, especially with beef, makes a lot of sense. You can reduce your carbon footprint more by reducing the amount of red meat you eat than you can by reducing your car use.

So I have considered reducing the amount of meat I eat, trying to eat more pork/fish instead of beef/lamb, but I just...like it...too much.

You can reduce your carbon footprint by eating traditional varieties of beef, Hereford, Angus, Galloway and Highland cows can be fattened on grass only, there has been a swing towards heavy rumped continental breeds like Limousin, Charolais, Belgian blue in recent years but then farmers are growing cereals to fatten them in sheds for the winter. It would probably mean the cost of beef going up a bit but I would rather pay more for meat and eat less better quality meat than we do now. I also think that if schoolchildren were introduced to farming, meat production including slaughter and carcasse preparation it would lead to more people making informed choices about what they eat.
