- MANAGER John Sheridan is not getting carried away by Plymouth Argyle’s rise up the League Two table.
The Pilgrims have won five of their last eight games, most recently beating Tranmere Rovers 1-0 at Prenton Park on Saturday.
That encouraging run of results has seen them climb from 14th to sixth position.
Argyle share the best defensive record in the division with leaders Wycombe Wanderers and fourth-placed Luton Town after conceding only eight goals in 12 games. They have also qualified for the last 16 of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, when they will be away to League One outfit Coventry City.
But Sheridan, who has targeted a promotion push this season, is staying level-leaded about the Pilgrims’ improved form.
He told Herald Sport: “We have just got to keep plugging away and not get carried away.
“We have done nothing yet. There are lots of things we still need to improve on in our game.”
Argyle picked up only a point per match from their first four League Two fixtures this season.
But since a 2-1 defeat at Bury on August 23 they have secured 15 points from eight games.
Sheridan said: “I would never say a corner has been turned. I try to stay the same all the time – whether we are winning or losing.
“I prefer it when we are winning, believe me. I have got to believe in what I’m doing, and that’s all I can do.
“We all know what points tally we need – two points a game throughout the season – that’s what I’m looking at. If you get that you will get promotion.”
The sheer unpredictability of League Two makes it difficult to forecast how the campaign will pan out.
For example, leaders Bury lost 3-2 away to AFC Wimbledon on Saturday while bottom-of-the-table Hartlepool United triumphed 2-1 at Exeter City, who had won their previous four games.
Sheridan said: “Everyone beats everyone – it’s a funny old league.
“It’s just getting that bit of consistency, the magic word. If you get that you have got a chance.”
Meanwhile, Sheridan explained that winger Nathan Thomas would return to training with Argyle this week, ahead of the game against Carlisle United at Home Park on Saturday.
Thomas was ruled out of the victory over Tranmere after he suffered an asthma attack during 3-2 defeat of Swindon Town in the JPT second round last Tuesday.
The 20-year-old was taken to Derriford Hospital on the night as a precaution and then saw a specialist on Friday.
Sheridan said: “I think he has got to change his medication and hopefully everything will be fine.”
