| [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]Sepp Blatter has said that awarding the 2022 World Cup to Qatar may have been a mistake. Bookmakers, such as William Hill have put a rather short price of 7/4 that the country will not host the World Cup and 6/1 that it'll be England that hosts it instead. Where does Plymouth fit into this if the World Cup was to return to England?. As one of the cities chosen to host some of the matches should England have been awarded hosting duties, would we still be expected to host the event at Home Park? Or does the South West lose out? Obviously in its current and proposed future form Home Park would not be a large enough venue to host such an event. Appreciate that this is all hypothetical, but I am curious as to how this bizarre situation would work? |

| Was Plymouth ever chosen to host matches? I thought we'd got to the stage of a long list that would be further whittled down. My memory says that even if England got the World Cup then there would be no guarantee of games at Home Park - we would have been in direct competition with Bristol for the right to host Senegal versus Romania in a group match.
I hated the way the FA set up the bidding to be host cities. And of course it's part in our downfall.
Anyway that ship has sailed or will have once we have a school and a dentist wedged into the corners of the ground. |

| Erm.... This is a Plymouth Argyle football related forum though Tring, surely it makes more sense for members to want to talk broadly on that subject than ignore it? |

| Only £3m in bribes to get the gig, disappointing level of baksheesh, Nigeria will pay double that just for a dodgy keeper. |

Like someone said on telly this morning, just auction the rights off. Then FIFA can stuff all the money into their own pockets without having to shovel it around from Trinidad to Timbuktu. |

| Some papers are saying that we might well end up with the 2018 WC yet, you know the one when the Russiians cheered the result before it was announced? You have made a great point about auctioning the WC Charlie, some people have pointed out that bribery and coruption are endemic in the world (including good old blighty) and if FIFA were reformed and started from scratch again then more corrupt officials would climb aboard the new gravy train. Personally I don't think that you can ignore it when found, FIFA needs a decent head, one that has honour, openess, transparency and morals. Anybody spring to mind? |

| Plymouth welcomes another shot at hosting the World Cup in 2018 ONE of Plymouth’s World Cup bid leaders says the possibility of England getting a second chance to bring the 2018 tournament to our shores would be “tremendous”. Questions have been asked about Qatar’s involvement in the 2022 bid, with an investigation alleging the state’s top official, Mohamed Bin Hammam, paid for votes. As the both the 2018 and 2022 votes were taken at the same time, football fans are calling for a re-vote on both. Just under £700,000 was spent to support Plymouth’s bid for host city status in 2010, centred around an ambitious plan to turn Home Park into a 46,000 all-seater stadium. The bid impressed FA chiefs, who put Home Park on their final list of stadiums. It was hoped that bringing World Cup football to the city would generate £292million for the local economy and create 3,700 jobs. But England’s bid was soundly beaten as FIFA chiefs voted for Russia. Lord Mayor Cllr Vivien Pengelly, leader of Plymouth City Council when the initial bid went in, said: “If England did have to re-bid then Plymouth must be involved because it was one of the eight towns where the matches could be played,” she said. “It would be tremendous to bid for the World Cup in Plymouth in 2018. “The amount of money and interest would be phenomenal – and the publicity. We need to get Plymouth on the map and let people know that we’re not a sleepy town. “If we had the opportunity it would be worth investing in. Organisations from across the city would have to contribute in one way or another.” The Plymouth bid hoped the city would be chosen to host at least four games and campaigned under the tag line ‘a beautiful city for the beautiful game’. It was instigated by Argyle’s former board in 2009 after the FA invited clubs to bid. However, Argyle went into administration shortly after the World Cup dream died, and The Herald later revealed how the club had run up debts of more than £1million on World Cup related development plans. The club is now under new ownership. A spokesman for Plymouth City Council said: “We were pleased to be a part of a local consortium for Plymouth in the original bid for England to host the 2018 World Cup and we were naturally disappointed when the bid was unsuccessful. If the opportunity to bid were to arise again and we had all the facts we would certainly consider it. We are always very keen to place Plymouth on the national and international stage.” An Argyle spokesman said: “We are not expecting a re-run of the vote for the 2018 World Cup. Therefore, we feel it would be inappropriate and disrespectful of the chosen host country for us to comment on any such speculation.” Read more at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]And it would spoil Mr Brent plan for his mini stand |
