Never saw Wilf play [just before my time] but my dad said that he was up there with Mariner,Tynan,Tadman etc as one of the best in the clubs history and that was good enough for me.A real Argyle legend over a long period of time.RIP Wilf.

148 goals in 275 appearances is some record. What we could do with someone like Wilf now. True legend.

Sadly, i don't think we'll ever see anybody with that kind of goalscoring record play for Argyle again, they'd be sold off long before they had chance to score that many goals, poor old Jimmy B has got a wife and kids to feed you know !!!

R.I.P Wilf - Argyle legend forever.

Never saw him play but he was one of my Dad's heroes. I met the guy who wrote the book on the 1958-59 team in town and he said that he found Wilf working at a supermarket pushing trollies and that it was sad when you consider what modern day footballers earn.

RIP Wilf

True enough but that's life and he certainly had his time in the sun, scoring goals in front of decent sized crowds. Something most of us would give our back teeth for.......................

Hmm, I must be really old, Wilf got 2 goals in the first match I saw in 1962, he was on the decline by then (only 14 goals that season Laughing ) I always thought Jimmy McEnearney was "silkier" but Wilf was a pure goalscorer. Boyhood memories like that (20000 at my first match) just make what we've got now just sooo depressing. RIP Wilf, and thanks.

I never saw him play, but Wilf Carter was always one of my favourites to write about - not only because he was such a massive goal scorer, but also because, according to so many who did see him, he did it all without any fancy skills. Instead, he made the most of what he could do and simply got stuck in, making him a perfect example of what used to be so great about football.

RIP Wilf and condolences to the family

Wilf Carter RIP

Just to put the record straight, the only time I saw my Dad with a supermarket trolley was when he was doing the weekly shop with my mum, and he did'nt like pushing it then. So it would be nice if you got your facts right and not make written statements that are not true.

My Dad adored the time he had at Plymouth, he lived the school-boy dream with his footalling career, and we are all proud of what he did, it was never about the money.

Apologies- I made the comment about the trollies- the author of the book did say that one of the players from that team was found pushing trollies I thought he said it was Wilf but obviously I was mistaken.

Sorry if I caused any offence, as I said in my post, Wilf was one of my Dad's heroes.
