Bert was a bit before my time but i have read quite a lot about him.German POW who settled in this country after WW2 and played for Man City as a goalkeeper,broke his neck in the FA cup final but played on in some agony until the final whistle and picked up his winners medal.Believe he used to cop a lot of stick from crowds in his early years with City but played through it and was ultimately very well liked and respected.RIP Bert.

I read he was at city from 1948 - 1964. Played a lot before my time but I was well aware of who he was after playing on with a broken neck. RIP Bert

Broken neck? Fuss and nonsense, the older generation were well 'ard, a proper legend. RIP.
I heard this story when I was quite young and always imagined him playing with his neck snapped clean though with him sort of holding his head on whilst diving about the goal area, probably did as well.
