| Emergency press conference called by the ECB for this lunchtime.
I'd go Matt Prior as replacement. Brave, attacking, positive...
Cook is just too uninspiring! |

| Since when have the ECB done anything brave, attacking or positive? Cook'll get it. He doesn't sweat apparently. Just the sort of captain this country needs, don't ya know. |

Just Test and 50 over, Broad is the 20/20 captain? Cook's been groomed as future captain for a long time and does not inspire me at all. Will this open the door just a crack for Pieterson to return? |

| The press conference has just started. Strauss is retiring form cricket completely - Test and County. Alastair Cook is sat next to him at the top table, so it's fairly clear who the new national captain is. |

| The Pietersen situation obviously had an effect on the team. In a short series against a good side, the margins are very small. For all his attitude problems Pietersen remains the one superstar in the England set up. His loss, psychologically as well as potentially physically is huge. The sorry business when they made him captain but then wouldn't back him in his plans for the team/ falling out with the coach, was a strange affair. He has always been difficult to handle, so unless you're going to back him 100% why make him captain ? He's probably never got over that experience. The IPL money is too good for anyone to turn down. Had the likes of Cook been wanted for big money , the ECB would have found a solution. Big players like KP don't come around too often and I fear he's gone for good from the England set up. His loss , but also a huge loss for England. The man is box office and our most feared player. Can't see England regaining top spot without him.
Another strange one............ I know Prior wasn't great opening or middle order for England a while back but he's in his prime now and with his international experience should be straight in as a batsman and logically keep too. The margins between success and failure are often small, so shooting yourself in the foot with selection policies is bewildering but predictable. |
