I understand why you're irritated Jock.
It's a corporate speak thing originally .... an attempt to get away from the perceived, slightly tacky, ox bow, laid back community endeavour, and try to infer zappy in control efficient teamwork..... just like the sponsors. It's developed into a bit of an unsaid old fashioned class thing that has always been there in sport.
All privately sponsored teams in 'sports' such as yauchteedom or horseydom have been team this or that for a long time. It's an attempt to distance from the football thing and infer something quite quite different.
A bit like being a band in the 70s rather than a group.
The highly amusing film Team America shows exactly what the language is all about as it satirises and puts down the enemy.
It's all linguistics.... the technique of saying something without technically saying anything supposedly. A raised eyebrow helps, but is not essential.
