As I have said on many occaisions, do you think the Bedouin looks out of his black tent across the blazing desert and says "Oh look the sun is shining. Or the Eskimo peeps out of his igloo across the frozen waste and says "Oh look snow" In Plymouth we don't comment on the rain for the same reason.

It's all to do with the jet stream. The UK is positioned where there is a constant battle between areas of low pressure (we and windy) coming in from the atlantic and high pressure areas (dry and sunny) coming from the south and east. The jet stream (a stream of high altitude fast moving air) normally flows over the top of Scotland south of Iceland. However, for the past few years it has moved south below the UK. And because it is more powerful than the two battling fronts it's southerly position has allowed the areas of low pressure sweeping in from the atlantic to dominate as it is holding back the areas of high pressure well to the South of the UK. Also there has been an unusually high number of atlantic lows this summer.

It's natural position is north of the UK, but it will vary quite a bit normally throughout the summer. It's just bad luck (for us) and coincedence that it's primarily held its position further south for a prolonged period, I think.
