| Argyle have signed Nigel Lonwijk on a season-long loan deal from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Defender Nigel, 19, becomes the sixth acquisition of the close season, coming on board just two days before the Sky Bet League One season gets under way.
Lonwijk had his football education at Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven, but came to England in January 2020 to sign for Wolverhampton. He played 22 games last season in a loan spell with Fortuna Sittard, who play in the Dutch top division, the Eredivisie.
Manager Steven Schumacher said: “I’m very pleased to have Nigel join us on loan from Wolves. He is a versatile defender who can play in any position in our back three.
“He is quick and aggressive in his defending and has shown good ability in possession of the ball, most notably whilst on loan last season in the Eredivisie.
“Nigel will compete and add competition to our defensive options and I’m sure he will enjoy his experience with us at Plymouth Argyle.”
The signing is subject to EFL approval.
Nigel will wear the number 21 shirt for the 2022/23 Sky Bet League One season. His home and away shirts will be sponsored by RGB Building Supplies Torquay.
Welcome to Home Park, Nigel. |

| Sounds good, decent pedigree. Tbh I'm relatively pleased with our acquisitions so far and the fact that we've managed to keep the vast majority of last seasons squad bodes well. Que Cooper, Hardie etc being poached before 3pm tomorrow lol. |

| Good move, we were lacking in defensive cover. Comes highly rated by all accounts. |

| Defender Nigel Lonwijk has signed a new Wolves contract ahead of spending the 2022/23 season on loan at League One outfit Plymouth Argyle.
The 19-year-old, who spent a successful year back in his homeland during the previous campaign, has signed a deal with Wolves until the summer of 2025, with the club holding the option of an additional year.
Having been in gold and black since January 2020 following a move from PSV Eindhoven, the Dutch centre-back made the temporary return to the Eredivisie last summer, joining Fortuna Sittard.
Lonwijk had already excelled with Wolves’ development side in Premier League 2, but in his first full season at senior level, he produced several impressive showings as a mainstay in the Sittard back line, while also becoming the club’s youngest ever scorer in the Dutch top flight when he found the back of the net against PEC Zwolle.
A youth international with Netherlands under-16s, Lonwijk will now get his first taste of senior English football, and strategic player marketing manager, Matt Jackson, believes the contrast between the leagues will provide the centre-back with vital experiences for his future career.
Jackson said: “Nigel was excellent at Fortuna, and for young centre-backs, it’s very, very tough to get game time, but he did that last season and we now want him to experience English league football and progress through this pyramid.
“There’s a really good mix in League One now, with some big sides – in which Plymouth are one – and teams obviously play a lot more games, they play to big crowds and there’s a tougher intensity to the league. Eredivisie tends to be more technical and slightly slower paced, so giving Nigel those varied experiences is exactly what we’re trying to do to support his development.
“Although he’s a very mature player for his age, he’s at the stage where he still needs that experience of games in different environments, and he’s going into a very good coaching environment down at Plymouth.
“They play a style from the back which we feel will suit him, but he’s got to go there and be competitive – something that you always have to be as a young centre-back – force your way into the team and play consistently well to stay in that team.
“If he can be a successful centre-back in Eredivisie and in English football, and is able to combine the qualities that both leagues have, then Nigel will be a top player.” |

| makes sense, if we're lucky maybe a different option up front to the 4 we have and we should be fine.
not a fan of relying on loans but its better then raiding brents basement basket, for misfits and crocks. |

| not supprised and quite happy we have brought in another defender given how iffy Bolton and Galloway are with injuries. Not that keen its another loan signing tbh as to me its like we have replaced last seasons loan signings with more loan signings and replaced the two full timers with full timers but he seems to be of good stock so im hopeful he will do the business here when he plays and he doesnt end up like critchlow and never plays despite doing ok when he did make brief appearances.
We have 2 players for every position now which is great we are in good shape atm pending how we do. Not going to say no to another striker but im sure there are loan limits per season and having 4 season long loanees we may need to save the one left for Jan and clearly the budget only allows for perm signings beyond the 2 we have made.

| Wolves are obviously making plans for him. Looks a good one but the big question is whether this is the first ever Nigel to play for Argyle? Awaits answer with bated breath. |

| There's a few centre forwards in L1 who will try to give him a battering. |

Highly rated in the u23s at Wolves, hopefully we get to see what they are talking about soon but to give the back 3 credit they seemed solid yesterday. Even Gillesphey for once. |
