NATO are concerned by a large military build up by Russian forces on the borders with Ukrain⁹e.

Lloyd Austin , US Defense Secretary , has been in conversation with his counterpart in Ukraine to offer support. The EU have also raised concerns.

Russia have insisted there is nothing to be worried about and NATO should keep away. Dmitry Peskov , Kremlin Spokesman ,  went on to say that any deployment of NATO troops would "undoubtedly lead to further tensions" and that the Russian side would then "have to take additional measures to ensure their security," without giving specifics.

Peskov played down Russian troop movements near the joint border, saying that "Russia is not threatening anyone."

Some may recall that the old USSR's western border had a buffer comprising of the old Warsaw Pact countries of which Belarus is now the sole remaining client state. Things were reasonably stable until the EU stuck it's oar in by having tete-et-tete talks with the Ukraine Government which put the wind up Putin and further alarmed his military general staff when the Ukraine suddenly informed the Russians that the lease for the use of the dockyards, anchorage and military airfields on the Crimean Peninsula wouldn't be renewed. This meant that for the Russian navy to have a presence in the Mediterranean / Black Sea, ships would have to sail all the way from the Barents Sea in the Arctic Circle. The fact that the French won the contract to build six frigates and update another two for the Romanian navy must have tipped the scales that was to lead to the eventual Crimea invasion.

USA demanding an explanation

No idea what Putin is up to , if it is a show of muscle aimed at Biden , then it's classic Putin. If on the other hand Putin wants to sweep into Ukraine and take more land , or bolster land already taken , bit of a dangerous game to play.

NATO again offer support for Ukraine

Hopefully this will be resolved by diplomatic means and not kick-off big time. It is certainly something to keep an eye on.

Now we know what the Russians are up to. They may intervene in the conflict in Ukraine by helping the separatists.

Getting a tad feisty. Just hope this does not escalate into anything other than words and warnings.

Been reading some reports that Russia are preparing for war with half a million troops moving to the Ukrainian border. No idea how valid these reports are , could just be newspaper talk.

There needs to be urgent talks right now and stop this madness , or Putin and his plans will lead to it all kicking-off in that region more so than it is now. NATO , the UK , the USA and the EU will not let that happen , surely ?.

Are there military excercises happening near us , as I was watching a fighter jet roaring  around the early evening sky last night , very loud.

Culdrose? I always thought the Hawk trainers were based at RAF Valley, Anglesey.

Pretty sure that the Hawk that crashed the other day was from Culdrose.

Heard it again about 45 minutes ago. Did not see it though.

Must be an exercise , or perhaps there are some Russian vessels passing by ?
