The pier was demolished in '53 ten years before I was born, my first memory of the Hoe was Sir Francis Chichester landing there with Gypsy Moth where there seemed to be a million people, all because he had sailed around the world, big deal in todays achievements lists eh?

25th January 1936. FAC 4th round. Chelsea 4 Plymouth Argyle 1. Note the glum faces and complete lack of head gear which was so prevalent in those days. Rumours has it, this photo was taken during a two minutes' silence for the death of King George V.

From which followed the abdication crisis.
