Middlesbrough are set for a swift reunion with Garry Monk as the former Boro manager prepares to take charge at Birmingham City.
The 38-year-old was sacked from his role at the Riverside in December 2017 after a muddled six-month reign saw Boro fall worryingly short in their automatic promotion quest.
Monk was axed just hours after a 2-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday on December 23, a result that left the club 12 points adrift of the top two and outside of the play-off places despite a summer outlay of more than £40m.
Since his departure, Monk has reiterated his belief that Boro would have stabilised and clinched promotion under his watch, and has been eager to make a quick return to the dugout after his disappointing stint on Teesside.
His wish is set to be granted, with Birmingham sacking Steve Cotterill on Saturday night after a 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest, and Monk is expected to be confirmed as the new man at St Andrew's within the next 24 hours.
That could mean Monk's first game in charge of the beleaguered Blues comes on Tuesday night in a home game against former club Boro, a match that takes on huge importance at either end of the Championship table.
