That's interesting.
And in a round about way that is not that important, explains why Stapes played for our Sunday League pub team on occasion. He always liked his footy.

He was passionate about football. Not a lot of skill but reliable. I was captain for a while (the only way a keeper gets made captain is because he shouts a lot). In one match our right back had to go off. I pulled Paul back to full-back and put the sub out on the wing. paul was not happy as he dearly wanted to be a goal-scorer. I told him he could tackle whereas the sub couldn't. Not happy but went along with it. He was actually a good bloke. My brothers knew him better than me and they always spoke well of him.

Then I was poached by Prince Rock. Herbie Crocker (who I think went on to better things in the SW League?) was my replacement at Woodland Fort & they went on to play in some final at Home Park. Prince Rock lost in our final or semi. Such is life.
