Mansfield Town manager Steve Evans has moved to capture former Plymouth Argyle striker Jimmy Spencer, the Stags are delighted to announce.
The 25-year-old forward spent 12 years with Huddersfield Town from the age of seven and made his professional debut for League Two side Morecambe after joining the Shrimps on a season-long loan deal.

He scored eight goals in 32 League appearances for the Lancashire side before returning to the Terriers, where he signed a new two-year contract.

Spencer then joined League Two club Cheltenham Town in July 2011 on a half-season loan, a move which was extended until the end of the season. He averaged a goal every four games for the Robins before returning to Huddersfield and earning a place in the first team.

The Leeds-born forward played in both league and cup competitions for the Terriers before being sent out on loan to test himself in League One with then-third tier club Brentford.

He spent his final loan spell with Scunthorpe United in the 2013/14 season and subsequently signed for League Two club Notts County, where he first worked under manager Shaun Derry.

Spencer scored five goals in 13 appearances for the Magpies and was rewarded with a new two-year at Meadow Lane.

However, he agreed to cancel his contract in January 2016 to link up with former boss Derry at his new club Cambridge United.

Spencer scored six goals in 18 appearances for the U’s, including a goal with his very first touch for the club in a 3-1 victory away to Leyton Orient.

He left the club at the end of the 2015/16 season and joined Plymouth Argyle, where he tasted promotion success.

The forward made 28 appearances for the Pilgrims as they won promotion from League Two and scored their final goal of the campaign, coming off the bench to get on the score-sheet in a 1-1 draw with Grimsby Town.

Speaking to www.mansfieldtown.net after signing, Spencer is eager to be involved in a promotion challenge next season.

"I just spoke to the manager (Steve Evans) and we’re looking for big things this season. We’re going to get out of this league, that’s what we all want, and I can’t wait to get started," the new Stags' striker said.

"The club’s looking to go to the next level and that’s what I want to do as well.

"It’s an unbelievable feeling, getting promoted. I’ve been to Wembley before with Cheltenham and we failed at the last hurdle but to get promoted automatically is unbelievable.

"It takes a lot during the season, grinding results as well as playing well but I think with the manager, he knows what it takes and let’s give it a good go."

Spencer’s contract will commence from 01 July and is subject to EFL ratification.

Good luck to him, thought he was a decent target man who played a part in Argyle's good early season form-unlucky to sustain that injury when he did, otherwise his career down here may have turned out very differently.
