The transfer deadline may have passed a week ago, but that does not stop players moving on loan to clubs below the EFL.

And Grimsby have allowed experienced midfielder Luke Summerfield to make the move to Vanarama National League side Macclesfield on loan for the rest of the season.

Summerfield, 29, had been a regular for the Mariners since moving from York last summer, but he has not featured in the team since December 31.

If the loan move suits Summerfield, it could lead to a permanent deal

Having a decent career in the lower leagues/non-league.
Never looked like he could handle championship football when at pafc, didnt stop some of the sychophant brigade declaring him to be the next Pele though

Only given a chance due to nepotism, not on merit

he had his uses but he was never championship standard regardless to his claim to fame that he was invited to train at chelsea when scott sinclair went back there for a week while on loan here.

How old was Summerfield while he was playing for us in the CCC? Not very, I'd wager.

He was unlucky here in as much as the standard at which he was forced to play was probably a little high for him at the time but had he emerged now with us in Div 4 how might we view his prospects?

This was where Wotton got lucky. Similarly aged he broke through into the first team but as a callow youth he only had to contend with 4th division football, about his limit at the time, and he went on to provide years of decent service as we climbed the divisions.

There's so much luck involved in being a successful pro-footballer and the pieces just fell into place for Wotton whereas they did not for Summerfield - unluckily for whom the trajectory was downward rather than upward.

Wotton wasnt all that either. set pieces, shouting and booting the ball.

What else did we need him to do?

Pass the ball with some accuracy.

That's one thing he couldn't do lol!
But he did make a very good defensive midfielder. His work off the ball, chasing down, was exemplary.
Funnily enough Summers could hit a good long cross field Charlton pass, but only 2 out of 4 suceeded.

There were times when Wotton couldn't even pass the ball 5 yards square accurately.

And yet he pinged corner after corner on a sixpence...

I'm not suggesting that he was the Perfect Footballer (he was the worst header of a ball of anybody that ever played CB and a bit slow, too) but he did what he did and that was good enough to lead us to 2 titles, play hundreds and hundreds of times and get picked by more different managers than any other player in our history (I admit to guessing here but I wouldn't be surprised - who beats him on that score if that isn't him?). He must have done something consistently right.

The thing here is we are all too ready to focus on a player's negatives rather than positives. Paul Wotton is as good an example as any: poor in the air, one-footed, slow, not a great passer. So what?

If he was a commanding header of the ball, two-footed, lightning quick with an eye for an exquisite pass then he wouldn't have played for us for very long, would he?, he'd've been plying his trade for a PL club and England and maybe even showing them pesky contintentals how us Janner Boys do it.

That wasn't him though. He was what he was. Not the greatest player who ever kicked a ball but one of our greatest players of all time.

Liken him to Mike Brearley in cricket: not a great batsman, not a great fielder, couldn't bowl... England were a better XI with him in it than not though. Others played better just because he was there. That's how it was for Wotton.

My judgement of Wotton is a touch clouded as I know quite a few people who knew/know him well. Incidentally, did anyone hear of the actual circumstances that led to Spencer breaking his ankle? Adams was seriously unimpressed.
