Alastair Cook resigns as England Test captain after leading the side in a record 59 matches. Alastair Cook had a rough ride as England captain with some up-and-down results.

I agree with that statement many ups and downs as captain. Probably the right time for him to step aside for a new guy so he can get some experience before the Ashes.

Hopefully it will help him get back to being the consistently prolific player that he was and equally hopefully taking the job on won't adversely affect Root, presuming he's appointed.

Agree with the above, a bit of a curates egg of a captaincy in terms of results. Won the ashes twice, series wins over India and beating the South Africans in their own back yard were highlights. On the minus side there were whitewashes in Australia and India along with a test defeat to Bangladesh. I would say ultimately he has been a good captain, many of Englands worst defeats were down to inexplicable middle order batting collapses and I can't see how the new guy can improve much

I didn't think he was any great shakes as a captain, but he can be a genuinely world class batsman. Hopefully he will regain some form as he could carry on for another 5-7 years yet. Hopefully the captaincy won't affect Root's form with the bat. A bit of a worry that there are no other candidates.
