MATCH of the weekend in Peninsula League football was a fascinating clash at Coach Road, where second-placed Argyle hosted the 100% record of Saltash United.
The visitors needed one more win to secure a league record of 11 straight wins at the start of a campaign, but the Ashes were swamped by some terrific Pilgrim passing in the early stages.
Argyle got their reward when a foul on Ben Steer earned the home side a penalty, neatly converted by Alex Battle. Saltash continued to chase hard for long periods but the pattern slowly changed around the half-hour, as the visitors found their own impressive rhythm.
Argyle were suddenly the side on the run and the Ashes pulled level through Ryan Richards just after the restart. Saltash continued piling forward, forcing their gifted hosts into a rare defensive mode.
The game was heading toward a satisfactory draw between two of the Peninsula heavyweights until a long ball over the two minutes from time picked out Steer and he rifled into the top corner to move the Pilgrims within a point of their visitors.
